Steven Holmes

Steven T. Holmes is vice president of the New Devices Group and general manager of Product Innovation and Engineering at Intel Corporation.  Holmes and his team are chartered with developing products and technologies that will enhance and extend Intel's product portfolio into new areas of computing, including a number of projects addressing sports performance technology for the Winter and Summer X games, smart glasses for athletic performance coaching, and a smart cricket bat used during the ICC Champions Trophy.

Prior to joining Intel in June 2012, Holmes delivered an extensive list of award-winning products.  Most recently as product director at Nike, Inc. he launched Nike+ Fuel Band*, Nike+ Training and Basketball*, and Nike+ GPS SportWatch*.  From 2007 to 2010, as vice president of Product Design for Palm, Inc., he developed the critically acclaimed Palm Pre* and Palm Pixi* smart phones.  At Apple, Inc.  Holmes led the product design teams responsible for professional desktop computers and servers, and led the mechanical design of the iconic Apple G4 Cube*.  His additional prior experience includes managing the San Jose design team at Flextronics and two successful startups: Zing, purchased by Dell Inc., and Intuitive Surgical, the leader in minimally invasive robotic surgery.

Steven earned his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from U.C. Berkeley in 1988 and his master's degree from Stanford University in 1990.

Mike Hughes

Mike has been working in elite level sport for more than 15 years, and has been an integral part of some outstanding teams, including British and Irish Lions, Senior England Rugby Team, British Cycling and England Squash. 

Mike was Lead Performance Analyst at British Cycling for four years (2004-2008) working with an extremely driven, high performance inter-disciplinary team striving for the accumulation of marginal gains. Mike provided support for 10 World Championships, 14 World Cup Events, the 2006 Commonwealth Games and the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Through this period, British Cycling gained 24 World titles, five Commonwealth gold medals and eight Olympic gold medals. 

He joined Insight Analysis (formerly PGIR), as it was then known, in 2008. Mike has designed and implemented all data collection and processing protocols from the RFU Senior team down through the Pathway. He was part of the England management team at the 2011 and 2015 Rugby World Cups, for 8 Six Nations tournaments including two wins and one Grand Slam, and was part of the touring party to Australia in 2016 where England won a series there for the first time in their history. Mike was also a Senior Performance Analyst on the British Lions Tours in 2013 and 2017. Both tours were very successful with the Lions winning a test series for the first time in 16 years against Australia and drawing the series in 2017 against New Zealand which is only the 2nd tour of all time that New Zealand have not won.

Over the last five years Mike retained his connection with Olympic sport by becoming a Performance Analyst Consultant for the English Institute of Sport and UK Sport. 

Academically Mike has a BSc in Maths and Sport Science, an MSc in Performance Analysis, over 25 published research papers, is accredited to Level 7 by ISPAS and has a BASES HPSA accreditation.

Nicolas James

Professor James is a world leading researcher in the areas of Neural Networks, Artificial Intelligence and Data Mining Techniques for sports performance. He will share his extensive knowledge gained in his roles as a Professor, and leader of a world leading post graduate sports analytics course, and as a data analysis consultant to many professional sporting bodies (including UK Sport, English Institute of Sport, Swansea Football, Saracens Rugby, Welsh Rugby, and Welsh Football). 

Professor James is currently Chair of the International Society of Performance Analysis of Sport and has delivered more than 30 international keynote speeches about data analytics in sport. He has published around 70 peer reviewed articles on Analytics in Sport and is also a world renowned expert in the area of data visualisation and the application of novel statistical methods applied to sporting data. This aside, Professor James is also an international level squash coach and national standard participant across a range of sports such as football and golf.
